What is colon hydrotherapy?
Colon hydrotherapy (colonic, colon cleansing, colonic irrigation) is a holistic, safe, effective method of removing putrified, impacted waste material from the large intestines, without the use of drugs. A colonic is an internal bath that cleanses and washes the inside of the body, the colon. Fecal, waste matter softens and loosens as a gentle flow of triple-filtered, sterilized, temperature-controlled water circulates throughout the colon, coaxing your body to yield the digested toxins and waste that may have built-up inside. The colon's natural peristalsis moves unhealthy waste material through the intestines via involuntary, muscular contractions that are stimulated by the inflow of water. The removal of waste, and subsequent tonification of peristalsis, encourages better colon function and elimination. Colon Hydrotherapy has been utilized for centuries as an adjunct to proper exercise, plenty of water, nutrition and personal hygiene. It is a safe, ancient, time-honored cleansing of the colon by repeated, gentle flushing with pure water.

How do I prepare for a colonic?
1. 24-hours before and after the colonic, stay away from gassy or gas-forming foods. Some common gassy
foods are beans, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, dairy, kombucha, bubbly water, and wheat.
2. Drink plenty of water the day before the colonic, but lessen this greatly during the hour before your appointment
so you will not need to urinate during your session. It is best not to eat anything two hours before your session.
3. Bring some coconut water to your session to replenish electrolytes.
4. Having a bowel movement prior to your session is certainly not essential but if you do feel the need to do so,
emptying the rectum with a bowel movement just prior to the colonic saves time and permits more to be
accomplished.
5. Print and fill-out an intake form, and bring it to your appointment. Find the form by clicking here.
Many clients find their colonic to be more effective by eating a cleansing diet of steamed produce (fruit and vegetables), with no sweets, starches, or processed food for a few days prior to their appointment. If you suffer from constipation, we recommend drinking a cup of Smooth Move Tea the night before your colonic, or taking 3 Triphala tablets morning-of and evening before your colonic. These can be found at any health food store in your neighborhood.

The appointment lasts for 50-60 minutes. The colonic itself, with water running, will last approximately 30-45 minutes. It will perhaps be shorter during an initial 60-minute session, which includes a consultation. We strongly recommend the 90-minute Colonic & Consult for first-time colonic clients, those who have not had one in a while, and others who desire more time to talk. It is also available as a 2-hour Massage Colonic Combo with Consult.
What type of colon hydrotherapy machine do you use?
Berkeley Colonic and Bodywork uses the Dotolo system, a state of the art, professional colonic irrigation device registered with the FDA. It will cleanse the entire colon (number of sessions to be determined) using filtered water. The device is a "closed system" which provides a comfortable procedure while maintaining the dignity of the client. It is a therapist-assisted device, which provides effectiveness, comfort and safety.
How do colonics help with toxicity?
Waste material that remains in the colon as impacted feces, dead cellular tissue, accumulated mucous, parasites, worms, and more may trigger various uncomfortable and toxic reactions in the body. These poisons can re-enter and circulate in the blood stream, possibly creating a feeling of being ill, tired or weak. Impacted materials may impair the colon's ability to assimilate minerals and bacteria- produced vitamins. And finally, a buildup of material on the colon wall may inhibit muscular action causing sluggish bowel movements, constipation, and the result of these disorders.
What does a colonic do?
Colonics are used to accomplish the following:
1. Cleanse the Colon: During colon hydrotherapy, toxic waste material and debris that has built up over a long period
of time is broken down and eliminated throughout the process of a series of colonic treatments. Once the
impacted waste material has been removed, the colon can again begin to function as it was intended to.
2. It Exercises the Colon Muscles: The build up of toxic debris weakens the colon and impairs its functioning. The
gentle filling and emptying of the colon improves muscular contractions by which the colon naturally moves
material.
3. It Reshapes the Colon: When problem conditions exist in the colon, they tend to alter its shape which in turn
causes more problems. The gentle action of the water, coupled with the massage techniques of the colon therapist
helps to eliminate bulging pockets of waste and narrowed, spastic constrictions finally enabling the colon to
resume its natural state.
4. It Stimulates Reflex Points: Every system and organ of the body is connected to the colon by reflex points colonic
stimulates these points, thereby affecting the corresponding body parts in a beneficial way.

What are some signs of a colon not functioning properly?
When sufferers finally visit a physician, they usually relate a history of one or more of these complaints that go back years: constipation, coated tongue, fetid breath, sallow complexion, dark circles under the eyes, abnormal body odor, cold hands and feet, blood pressure up or down, brittle nails and hair, sagging posture (pot belly), tension, fatigue, allergies, indigestion, menstrual problems, swelling of legs, asthma, backache, skin problems, and loss of memory or concentration.
What are the signs of a healthy colon?
1. Having a bowel movement shortly after each meal.
2. Elimination should be easy and take no more than a few seconds.
3. Stools should be long, large in diameter, light brown in color, without offensive odor and should float or sink very
slowly.
4. When the toilet is flushed, stools should immediately begin breaking apart by the action of water movement.

Is a Colonic painful?
Colonics are rarely painful. Discomfort may arise as a result of resistance, tension and accumulated gas. Sometimes during a colonic, the colon muscles will contract suddenly expelling considerable amounts of liquid and waste into the rectum and out of the body. This may feel like cramping or gas, and may create a feeling of urgency to empty the rectum. Such episodes, if they do occur, are most often brief and easily tolerated. Many people discover that they feel lighter, more clean and clear afterward; they acknowledge that any discomfort they may feel on the system is part of the deep cleansing, and a means to this incredible feeling of emptiness and clarity they experience once the session is complete.
Are Colonics Safe?
Yes. Colonics are a safe and effective method to cleanse your colon.
How many colonic sessions do I need?
The protocol suggested may vary from person to person, depending on how the session goes and the individual wellness goals. We generally recommend you start with one and notice how your body feels and responds, in conjunction with what the therapist may suggest as a result of the session's progress. Many books written by medical Doctors and experts, that have done research in this area, recommend an initial series of six to twelve in order to eliminate years of toxic waste build up. There are a variety of ways this may be accomplished. Many people benefit from starting with more than one colonic during the first week of colon cleansing, sometimes multiple days in a row, followed by once a week for the remainder of the series. Many people begin with a series of 3 weekly treatments, and add-on more colonic sessions afterward.
Why may I most likely need more than one?
The human body is exceptionally smart. When we cleanse the colon, the body begins to pull waste from the tissue and deliver them into the blood stream. The waste heads for the liver, then back to the colon. Sometimes this may deem a second session within days of the first necessary so that the digested waste is eliminated rather than reabsorbed. Cleansing in this manner slows detoxification to a gentler, tolerable rate.
What should I eat after the colonic?
No gassy or gas-forming foods such as beans are to be eaten following the colonic (same for 24 hours before the colonic). It is recommended that the diet consist of a lot of water and fresh juices as well as soup broths and puréed soups for twenty-four hours following the colonic.
Do I need a referral from my healthcare provider?
It is helpful to discuss colonics with your healthcare provider. It is important that they be informed and agree that colonics are beneficial to your overall well-being and if you have any health issues a prescription will be needed. We will need a physician's referral for these conditions or treatments: anti-coagulants, colitis, severe debilitation or terminal illness.
Are there contraindications to colon hydrotherapy?
Yes. Consult with your healthcare provider prior to scheduling with our office. In the event you have health issues, your medical practitioner may write a referral or prescription specifying frequency, etc. Contraindications for current conditions: anal fissure, anal fistula, abdominal aneurism, bowel impaction, Crohn's Disease, colon cancer, colon, rectal or abdominal surgery (less than 6 months ago), colostomy, dysentery, diverticulitis (episode less than 6 months ago), hemorrhoids (now painful or bleeding), abdominal or laguinal hernia (un-repaired), Kidney dialysis, pregnancy, rectal bleeding, ulcerative colitis.
What can I expect after the colonic?
Most people remark about how great, light, clean and clear they feel. If the body is extremely toxic, one may feel a bit fatigued as old toxins that have been stored throughout your body are now re-circulating into the colon. For some, the colonic may trigger several subsequent bowel movements for the next few hours, but there will most likely not be any uncontrollable urgency or discomfort. It's also possible you may feel light-headed or chilled for a few moments following a colonic. This is why bringing electrolytes for the close of the treatment can be helpful.
